Prices Explained

The ‘Regular’ Price: There are many names, ‘List’, ‘Regular’, ‘Asking’, ‘tag’, ‘ticket’, ‘MSRP’ (manufacturer’s suggested retail price), ‘Retail’ (RET), ‘assessed at’, ‘normally’. These prices are commonly used across Canada to establish a value for a product.

The ‘Promotion’ Price: Again, there are many names ‘sale’, ‘save’, ‘up to 20%, 40%,60% off’, ‘Black Friday’ ‘Boxing’, ‘Days’, ‘Clearance’, ‘Grand opening’, ‘Introductory’, ‘store closing’, ‘4 day sale’, ‘Holiday Sale’, ‘Employee Pricing’, ‘price adjustments’ and so on.

The Actual Selling Price: For big ticket items: vehicles, home furnishings, mattresses, appliances the various promotions are what the products sell for and rarely if ever are they sold at the ‘Regular’ price. The various ‘regular’ prices are a reflection of the valuation of the product but are not what the product typically sells for. Note: some retailers occasionally offer more modest discounts of 5%, 10%, 20% off prices that product actually sells for.

The Good News: The consumer is the big winner. Retailing in Canada is very competitive and products are sold at substantial discounts off the regular price as well product quality is high, selection is wide, and customer service is a priority with the majority of retailers. It doesn’t get any better for the customer!

No Tax Details: No tax means the price you see is all you pay. The HST is included in the price. For your information, the bill of sale will show the breakdown of the amount of HST we submit to the government. ‘No tax’ is a limited time offer.

Example: Sale price $899
Breakdown: Sub total $795.57
HST $103.43
